Description
The A.KRÜSS KSW4000 Stereo Gemstone Microscope is a professional gemmological microscope designed for the detailed examination of diamonds, gemstones, inclusions and internal characteristics.
Combining high-quality stereo optics with 10x and 30x magnification, LED incident and transmitted lighting, and a dark-field condenser, it delivers sharp, detailed images across a wide field of view.
Equipped with a rotatable stone holder, adjustable eyepieces and interchangeable specimen plates, the KSW4000 is an excellent choice for gemmologists, diamond graders, jewellers, gemstone dealers and professional jewellery workshops.
Key Features
- 10x & 30x Magnification – Two magnification levels for examining gemstones and identifying fine details.
- High-Quality Stereo Optics – Sharp, three-dimensional viewing with a wide field of view.
- Dark-Field Illumination – Helps reveal low-contrast inclusions, internal features and their outlines.
- LED Incident & Transmitted Lighting – Flexible illumination for different gemstone examination techniques.
- Rotatable Stone Holder – Allows gemstones to be positioned and examined from different angles.
- 45° Inclined Eyepieces – Comfortable viewing during detailed inspection.
- Adjustable Eye Distance & Dioptres – Individual adjustment for comfortable binocular observation.
- Interchangeable Contrast Plates – Glass and black/white plates for different examination requirements.

Advanced Dark-Field Illumination for Gemstone Inclusions
The KSW4000 dark-field condenser is particularly useful for examining inclusions and internal characteristics in transparent gemstones.
Dark-field illumination helps make low-contrast inclusions and their outlines easier to observe against a darker background. This is valuable when studying internal features, growth structures and other characteristics relevant to gemstone identification and evaluation.
The microscope also offers incident light for illumination from above and transmitted light for examination using light passing through the specimen.
Precision Stereo Optics – 10x & 30x Magnification
The KSW4000 features 10x widefield eyepieces and a rotating objective system with 1x and 3x objectives, providing two standard magnifications:
- 10x Magnification: For general gemstone observation and locating features.
- 30x Magnification: For closer examination of inclusions, surfaces and fine details.
The 45° inclined binocular viewing head, adjustable interpupillary distance and dioptre adjustment help users achieve a clear, comfortable image.
Designed for Diamond & Gemstone Examination
The KSW4000 is suitable for professional examination of diamonds, coloured gemstones and jewellery stones.
Typical applications include:
- Diamond Inspection: Examining visible inclusions, surface features and internal characteristics.
- Gemstone Identification: Studying features that may assist gemmological identification.
- Clarity Assessment: Observing inclusions and characteristics relevant to diamond and gemstone clarity.
- Gemstone Quality Control: Checking stones before setting, purchasing or further examination.
- Jewellery Workshops: Inspecting gemstones and stone-mounted jewellery where accessible.
- Gemmological Education: Teaching and practising microscopy techniques.
The microscope can support the visual examination involved in diamond quality assessment, including characteristics relevant to the 4Cs: colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. However, accurate colour grading, cut evaluation and carat-weight determination require appropriate additional methods or instruments; microscopy alone does not establish all four grades.
Rotatable Stone Holder & Flexible Specimen Positioning
The microscope includes a rotatable stone holder and specimen clamps to help position stones securely during examination.
The stone holder allows the viewing angle to be changed without repeatedly handling the gemstone, making it easier to inspect different facets and internal features.
The interchangeable glass and black/white contrast plates provide additional flexibility when examining different specimens.
How to Use the KSW4000 Gemstone Microscope
- Position the Gemstone: Place the specimen on the appropriate plate or secure it using the rotatable stone holder or specimen clamp.
- Select the Illumination: Choose incident light, transmitted light or dark-field illumination according to the examination.
- Adjust the Viewing Head: Set the eyepiece distance to match your eyes.
- Focus the Image: Release the head locking screw if adjustment is required, position the head and use the focus control until the image becomes sharp. Secure the head before continuing.
- Adjust the Dioptres: Focus using the right eyepiece, then adjust the left eyepiece independently to obtain a comfortable binocular image.
- Change Magnification: Rotate the objective housing by 180° to switch between the 10x and 30x magnification settings.
- Inspect the Stone: Rotate or reposition the gemstone to observe inclusions, surface details and internal characteristics from different angles.
The microscope's three-way lighting switch selects the available illumination modes. Use the manufacturer's operating instructions for the exact switch positions.
Vertical & Horizontal Assembly Options
The KSW4000 manual provides instructions for both vertical and horizontal microscope configurations.
- Vertical Assembly: The vertical setup uses the binocular microscope head, specimen stage, interchangeable plates and stone holder for conventional downward gemstone examination. The manual also shows installation of the incident-light light guide at the rear lamp holder.
- Horizontal Assembly: The horizontal configuration uses a horizontally mounted pillar, vertically installed specimen stage, polarisation device, stone holder and optical cell. This arrangement supports alternative gemstone viewing and examination methods.
Why Choose the A.KRÜSS KSW4000?
The A.KRÜSS KSW4000 combines high-quality stereo optics, dual magnification, versatile LED illumination and dedicated gemstone-holding accessories in one professional instrument.
Its dark-field condenser is especially valuable for examining low-contrast gemstone inclusions, while the rotatable stone holder and adjustable viewing system make detailed inspection more convenient.
An excellent choice for gemmologists, diamond professionals, jewellery manufacturers, gemstone dealers and laboratories seeking a versatile stereo microscope for gemstone observation and quality control.
