Advanced Tungsten Detection for Investment Gold
Tungsten is a particular concern in counterfeit gold bullion because its density is very close to that of gold. This means that a gold-plated tungsten core may produce a convincing weight and size.

The MagneticScreenScale uses the different magnetic properties of materials to help identify concealed tungsten and other detectable foreign-metal inclusions.

According to the manufacturer, its magnetic field can detect tungsten beneath up to 3mm of fine gold (99.99%).

This makes the instrument especially useful for screening investment gold bars and coins where a conventional surface-only examination may not reveal an internal counterfeit core.

Important: Detection performance depends on the composition, geometry and magnetic properties of the test object. A normal result does not independently guarantee authenticity.

Non-Destructive Testing Through Plastic Packaging

The instrument does not detect every counterfeit material. Some combinations of genuine and counterfeit metals have similar magnetic properties and may not be distinguishable using this method alone.

How to Use the MagneticScreenScale

1. Prepare the Workspace: Position the instrument on a stable, vibration-free surface away from draughts, electronic equipment and magnetic interference.
2. Allow Warm-Up Time: Switch on the scale approximately 5–10 minutes before testing.
3. Check for Ferromagnetic Materials: Use the supplied bar magnet to check whether the object is strongly attracted to a magnet. Do not place strongly ferromagnetic objects on the measuring head.
4. Prevent Static Interference: Use the supplied anti-static spray according to its instructions, particularly when working with plastic capsules or blisters.
5. Prepare the Test Object: Ensure the item is clean and dry, and that its size and weight are suitable for the instrument.
6. Perform the Measurement: Follow the manufacturer's operating procedure and reference measurements for the relevant precious metal and object type.
7. Interpret the Result: Evaluate the magnetic response alongside the item's weight, dimensions, composition and any additional authenticity tests required.

Important Testing Limitations & Safety Information

The instrument identifies differences in magnetic behaviour. It cannot detect every type of counterfeit core, particularly where the core and surrounding precious metal have similar magnetic properties.

For example, the manufacturer explains that a bismuth core may be detectable in palladium, while a titanium core may not be distinguishable using magnetic testing alone.

Iron, nickel and cobalt can strongly influence readings. Certain alloyed gold coins, including some historical and modern bullion issues, may contain small quantities of ferromagnetic material and produce negative values even when genuine.

The manufacturer advises particular caution with negative readings, especially those below −0.050g, and recommends further examination rather than drawing conclusions from one result.

Strongly ferromagnetic objects must not be placed on the measuring head, as they may cause damage or injury.

Ordinary capsules and plastic films can generally be used during testing, but thick plastic or static electricity can distort results. Use the supplied anti-static spray as directed.

Operating environment
For reliable measurements, operate the device between 15°C and 30°C, preferably 20–25°C, away from vibration, draughts, moisture, direct heat and electromagnetic interference.

Keep ferromagnetic materials and electrical or electronic devices at least 30cm away. Do not place items on the measuring head while wearing a wristwatch on the same hand.

The MagneticScreenScale is a screening instrument, not a standalone guarantee of authenticity. Where results are uncertain or financial stakes are significant, confirm findings using additional appropriate testing methods.
