Description
Description
The Thermo Scientific Niton XL2 XRF Precious Metal Analyzer is a professional handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) instrument designed for fast, accurate and non-destructive analysis of gold, silver, platinum, palladium and other precious metal alloys.
Ideal for gold buyers, jewellers, refiners and precious metal dealers, the Niton XL2 measures elemental composition and helps determine precious metal purity without cutting, scratching or damaging the tested item.
Featuring a colour touchscreen, portable design and advanced XRF technology, it provides analytical results in seconds, helping professionals make more informed buying, selling and refining decisions.
Professional Gold Purity & Precious Metal Testing
The Niton XL2 uses X-ray fluorescence to identify and measure the elements present in the analysed surface of a metal object.
It is suitable for examining:
- Gold (Au): Gold content, alloy composition and purity assessment.
- Silver (Ag): Silver content and associated alloying elements.
- Platinum (Pt): Platinum alloy composition.
- Palladium (Pd): Palladium content and alloy analysis.
- Other metals: Additional elements covered by the instrument's installed precious metal calibration.
Unlike traditional acid testing, XRF analysis does not require chemical reagents or destructive sample preparation.
Gold-Plating & Counterfeit Screening
The Niton XL2 supports the identification of many gold-plated and incorrectly represented precious metal items.
Thermo Scientific's AuDIT™ gold-plating detection technology, where enabled on the instrument, helps identify suspicious gold-plated materials, including gold over silver, copper, steel and other substrates.
Important: XRF primarily measures the composition of the material near the surface. Thick plating, complex constructions and concealed internal cores may require additional testing. XRF analysis alone cannot guarantee that an object is solid gold throughout.
How the Niton XL2 XRF Analyzer Works
The instrument directs X-rays at the test surface, causing elements within the material to emit characteristic fluorescent X-rays.
The detector measures these signals, and the analyser calculates the elemental composition using its installed calibration.
For a typical measurement:
- Ensure the instrument is correctly configured, calibrated and operated by an appropriately trained user.
- Prepare a clean, accessible testing surface.
- Position the analyser in accordance with the manufacturer's radiation safety instructions.
- Start the measurement using the instrument controls.
- Review the elemental composition and calculated results on the colour touchscreen.
- Where necessary, test additional locations and confirm the findings using complementary methods.
Measurement accuracy depends on the material, surface condition, calibration, measurement time and sample geometry.

Important XRF Testing Limitations
XRF provides elemental analysis of the sampled region, primarily near the material's surface.
It is an effective method for checking precious metal alloy composition and screening many plated items, but it does not independently establish the composition of an object's entire interior.
For high-value bullion and suspected counterfeits, combine XRF testing with appropriate complementary methods, such as ultrasonic testing, density measurement or electrical conductivity testing.
Radiation Safety & Regulatory Requirements
- This instrument generates X-rays and is intended for appropriately trained, authorised professional users.
- Operation, possession, registration and transport may be subject to radiation safety regulations and licensing requirements in the country of use.
- Follow the manufacturer's operating instructions and all applicable radiation protection procedures. Never direct the X-ray beam towards people or operate the instrument without the required safety controls.
The Thermo Scientific Niton XL2 XRF Precious Metal Analyzer provides rapid, non-destructive elemental testing for professionals who need reliable information about gold, silver, platinum and palladium alloys.
